Custom Case Study: Spanish Client Procures 100 Oversized PTFE Sintered Filter Elements

In the harsh environment of high temperatures and strong acids, a filtration solution from Spain is quietly safeguarding the purity and safety of production lines.

Recently, we successfully customized a batch of special-specification PTFE Sintered Filter Cartridges for our Spanish client—50mm diameter, 1040mm length, M30 threaded connection (90mm thread length), with filtration precision as high as 0.1 microns. This batch of 100 customized cartridges will be deployed in the client's European chemical production line, addressing their long-standing challenge of filtering high-temperature, strong-acid media.

01 Client Background and Challenges

As a major European chemical production hub, Spanish enterprises demand exceptionally high standards for filtration in their manufacturing processes. This client, a specialty chemicals manufacturer, handles multiple highly corrosive media and high-temperature conditions in its production.

Previously used metal filter cartridges suffered severe corrosion within three months in strong acid environments, leading to reduced filtration efficiency, frequent replacements, and high maintenance costs.

The media requiring filtration contained minute solid particles, some smaller than 0.5 microns. Traditional filter cartridges struggled to effectively capture these fine particles, compromising the purity of the final product.

The production line required continuous operation, demanding the filtration system withstand operating temperatures up to 180°C (356°F) and working pressures of 0.6 MPa (0.06 MPa). This posed a significant challenge to the temperature resistance and pressure tolerance of the filter cartridges.

02 Solution and Product Features

To address the customer's unique requirements, we proposed a customized PTFE sintered filter cartridge solution. PTFE sintered filter cartridges are high-performance filtration elements manufactured from pure polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) through high-temperature, high-pressure sintering.

Core Specifications:

  • Diameter: 50mm (optimized size within the standard Φ20-Φ60mm range)
  • Length: 1040mm (approx. 40 inches, an oversized custom dimension)
  • Connection: M30 thread with 90mm thread length (ensures secure connection)
  • Filtration Precision: 0.1 micron (high-precision filtration)
  • Quantity: 100 units (meets mass production requirements)

PTFE filter elements feature extensive chemical compatibility, withstanding strong acids, alkalis, and organic solvents—exceeding the chemical stability of metal filters. Operating temperatures reach 200°C, supporting steam sterilization and fully accommodating high-temperature process demands.

Compared to metal filter cartridges with only 30% porosity, PTFE sintered filter cartridges achieve over 50% porosity. This provides greater fluid flow rate per unit filtration area, significantly enhancing filtration efficiency.

The filter surface features a wax-like smoothness that resists impurity adhesion. Combined with a gradient filtration design (high precision outer layer, low precision inner layer), impurities are less likely to embed within the core, facilitating easy cleaning and enabling repeated use.

03 Application Fields and Advantages

PTFE sintered filter cartridges are widely used in demanding filtration environments across multiple industries.

In the chemical industry, they handle filtration of strong acids and alkalis, catalyst recovery, and more. In the pharmaceutical sector, they serve GMP processes like drug solution filtration and sterile air preparation. In the food industry, they enable precision filtration of juices, alcoholic beverages, and edible oils. In environmental protection, they excel in heavy metal wastewater treatment and flue gas dust removal.

Compared to the metal filter cartridges previously used by the client, this customized PTFE cartridge offers extended service life (expected to last over 12 months), reducing replacement frequency and maintenance costs.

Filtration precision as high as 0.1 microns ensures product purity, helping clients elevate their product quality grades. The cartridge's exceptional toughness minimizes the risk of breakage during operation, guaranteeing production continuity.

04 Value of Customization Services

This collaboration fully demonstrates our technical expertise in customizing special-specification filter elements. From receiving the customer's requirements to delivering the product, we overcame the process challenge of sintering an ultra-high aspect ratio filter element.

While PTFE Sintered Filter Elements typically feature standard M20, 222, and 226 interfaces, we specifically developed an M30 interface design (90mm thread length) to meet the client's unique system requirements, ensuring sealing integrity and pressure resistance at connection points.

The oversized dimensions—50mm diameter and 1040mm length—provide a significantly larger filtration area (approximately 0.65m²/10 inches) per cartridge. This enhances filtration efficiency and reduces the number of cartridges required in client equipment.

This batch of customized filter cartridges has been successfully shipped to Spain, where it is projected to reduce maintenance costs by 30% and increase filtration efficiency by 25% for the customer.
